“Pakoda means little fat, but Bonda means very fat…”

“Pakoda means little fat, but Bonda means very fat…” November 25, 2002 (Monday) Swami came towards a student and materialised a ring for him. Swami    :    Correct size. Is it ok? Student    :    Yes Swami. Swami    :  Goldsmith, Size Teesukoni wrong size Chesistaadu (A goldsmith even after taking the size makes a wrong-sized one)! (To Brindavan Warden) Have all the boys come? Warden    :    Yes Swami. Swami    :    (To a student) How are you Pakoda? (Swami often uses this name to tease students who are chubby or over-weight. ‘Pakoda’ is a kind of fried item made of flour.) (To another student) What is the difference between a Pakoda and a Bonda? (There was no reply. Then He said smilingly) Pakoda Ante Koncham Fat, Bonda Ante Chaala Fat (Pakoda means little fat, but Bonda means very fat).  (Takes a letter from a few students. Seeing one of the letters.) This is waste of paper. (Seeing another) Good boy, you should write only two lines. (Takes another letter from a student) He has written, “My Dear Lord.” If you write, “Our Dear Lord,” many will be included. But if you write only, “My Dear Lord,” only you are included. (Taking a letter from a student) This boy spoke better than you the other day. He spoke very confidently and firmly. Swami then went back into the interview room. Pakoda Means Little Fat Bonda Means Very Fat In Indian culture, simple words often carry profound meanings that go far beyond their literal interpretation. One such interesting phrase is Pakoda means little fat, but Bonda means very fat. While this may sound like a humorous observation about popular Indian snacks, it can also serve as a reminder of the spiritual lessons hidden within everyday life. The teachings of Shri Sathya Sai Baba often encouraged devotees to look beyond appearances and discover deeper truths. In the same way, Pakoda means little fat, but Bonda means very fat can be viewed as a symbolic expression of how small differences can lead to significantly different outcomes. A slight change in thought, action, or attitude can greatly influence a person’s spiritual journey. In the rich traditions of Devotional India, ordinary experiences are frequently used to explain higher spiritual concepts. Saints and spiritual masters have long employed simple examples from daily life to communicate profound wisdom. Just as a pakoda and a bonda may appear similar at first glance, human beings too may look alike externally, yet their inner qualities, values, and spiritual awareness can vary greatly. Shri Sathya Sai Baba repeatedly emphasized the importance of self-examination. He taught that individuals should focus on purifying their hearts and cultivating virtues such as love, compassion, humility, and selfless service. When reflected upon carefully, Pakoda means little fat, but Bonda means very fat can remind us that even minor habits, if ignored, can gradually grow into larger obstacles on the path of spiritual progress. Life often presents countless opportunities to learn. Every conversation, situation, and experience can become a source of wisdom when viewed with awareness. The phrase Pakoda means little fat, but Bonda means very fat encourages us to pay attention to details and recognize that growth or decline usually begins with small steps. Positive thoughts can expand into noble actions, while negative tendencies can become major challenges if left unchecked. The spiritual heritage of Devotional India teaches that true transformation starts from within. Devotees are encouraged to develop inner discipline and maintain constant remembrance of God. Shri Sathya Sai Baba highlighted that character is built through consistent practice and sincere devotion. Small acts of kindness, regular prayer, and selfless service may seem insignificant at first, but over time they create a powerful foundation for spiritual evolution. Ultimately, the wisdom hidden in simple expressions can inspire meaningful reflection. Pakoda means little fat, but Bonda means very fat is more than a playful comparison; it can serve as a reminder that every choice matters. By following the teachings of Shri Sathya Sai Baba and nurturing positive qualities, devotees can move steadily toward a life filled with peace, love, and spiritual fulfillment. Such understanding helps transform ordinary moments into opportunities for divine growth and self-realization.
