Apparitions

Apparitions Over the years, many people have reported that Sai Baba has appeared before them in various places around the globe in a living form – yet He has ‘physically’ left India only once.  One example is Connie Shaw, the American author and lecturer, who states in her book Wake Up Laughing that Baba has appeared in her home in Colorado over fifty times!  At one point He appeared in the middle of the night, waking her from sleep with a tap on the shoulder, to request that she take over the presidency of a local Sai Center.  Since the center was mainly comprised of Indians and she felt it would be inappropriate for a Westerner to lead them, she refused His request.  The next night He came again, and again she refused.  When He appeared for the third consecutive night she finally relented and agreed to lead the center.  When she reluctantly told the president of the Center about the apparitions, he confessed that on the same three nights Baba had appeared in his home as well, requesting that he resign so Connie could take his place! Another example is James Sinclair, an American businessman who had never heard of Sai Baba, and who saw, on two occasions, an orange-robed man with an afro appearing and disappearing in his house in the USA.  Inquiring at a spiritual book store if any living Master fit the description, he was shown a photo of Sai Baba, whom he instantly recognized as the man in his home.  When Sinclair finally made it to Baba’s ashram, the first thing Baba said to him was, “I came to you twice!” Apparitions – A Sacred Sign of Divine Presence and Grace Apparitions are mysterious spiritual experiences in which a divine form, saintly presence, or sacred vision appears before a devotee. Such moments are not ordinary experiences of the mind. For a sincere heart, they become powerful reminders that the Divine is not limited by physical distance, time, or human understanding. When a devotee feels lost, afraid, or deeply prayerful, grace may reveal itself in a form that brings comfort, courage, and faith. Many people try to understand these experiences only through logic, but spiritual life also belongs to the heart. A person may see a holy form in a dream, during prayer, in a moment of danger, or in deep meditation. Sometimes the vision may appear clearly; sometimes it may be felt as a presence rather than seen with the eyes. Apparitions often leave behind peace, strength, and a feeling that one has been touched by divine love. The purpose of such experiences is not to create excitement or pride. A true divine vision does not make a person feel superior to others. Instead, it makes the heart humble and grateful. It reminds the devotee to live with truth, purity, compassion, and devotion. If a sacred experience does not improve character, then its deeper message has not been understood. Apparitions can also come during times of suffering. When people are seriously ill, emotionally broken, or facing great fear, they may feel the presence of Baba or another divine guide near them. This presence may not always remove the difficulty immediately, but it gives courage to face it. Sometimes a single vision can remove years of doubt and fill the heart with fresh faith. In devotional life, many devotees have shared that Baba appeared to them when they needed guidance or protection. Some felt Him standing near their bedside during illness. Some saw Him in a dream giving a message. Some felt His presence during travel, prayer, or danger. These experiences become deeply personal. Others may question them, but the devotee who receives them knows the peace they bring. Apparitions should be understood with both faith and discrimination. Not every unusual feeling should be accepted blindly, and not every spiritual experience should be announced loudly. True experiences are sacred and should make a person more silent, sincere, and devoted. The real test is always the result: Does the experience bring peace? Does it reduce fear? Does it increase love? Does it inspire service and good conduct? The Divine can appear in many ways because divine love is not bound by one form. Sometimes Baba may appear through a dream. Sometimes His guidance may come through a photograph, a voice within, a line from a book, or a stranger who speaks the exact words needed at the right time. Grace chooses its own path. The devotee’s duty is to remain humble, thankful, and alert to the message. Apparitions also remind us that the physical eyes are not the only way to experience truth. The heart has its own vision. A mother can feel her child’s pain even from far away. A devotee can feel Baba’s nearness even without seeing Him physically. Love creates a connection that distance cannot break. In the same way, divine love can reach the devotee through subtle and sacred experiences. However, one should not chase visions as the main goal of spirituality. The goal is not to see something extraordinary, but to become pure, loving, peaceful, and useful to others. A person may have no vision at all and still be a great devotee if the heart is full of love and the life is full of service. Baba valued transformation more than display. He wanted people to become better human beings. Apparitions become meaningful when they lead to inner change. If anger becomes patience, fear becomes faith, selfishness becomes service, and doubt becomes devotion, then the experience has fulfilled its purpose. A sacred vision is like a lamp shown on the path. It is meant to guide the seeker forward, not make him stop and feel proud. In daily life, devotees can honor such experiences by practicing Baba’s teachings. They can speak gently, help the needy, respect elders, pray sincerely, and avoid hurting others. They can remember that Baba is present not only in visions, but also in every act of
