A Message for Mankind

In 1940, Sathya was barely fourteen years old. Yet, such was the faith of the masses in His Divinity that people flocked, young and old, rich and poor. Included in this crowd of devotees were Maharajahs and members of the landed gentry. Besides, the Press also began take notice. Elder brother Seshama Raju, not yet fully aware of Baba’s Divinity, began to worry about the impact of the attention that his younger brother was receiving. Would this adoration go to the head of young Sathya? Would He fall a victim to various temptations? Seshama Raju conveyed his anxiety to Baba, who sent a reply on 25th May, 1947. Though the letter was intended for Seshama Raju, it was in fact addressed to ‘all who are devoted to Me’. That letter is a powerful declaration of the purpose of the Sai Avatar. In that letter, Baba wrote:

My dear One! I received all the communication that you sent. I found in it the surging floods of your devotion and affection, with the undercurrents of doubts and anxiety. Let Me tell you that it is impossible to plumb the hearts and discover the nature of Jnanis [Wise men], Yogis, ascetics, saints, sages, and the like. People are endowed with a variety of characteristics and mental attitudes; so, each one judges according his own angle, talks and argues in the light of his own nature. But we have to stick to our own path, our own wisdom, and our own resolution, without getting affected by popular appraisal. As the proverb says, it is only the fruit-laden tree that receives the shower of stone from the passersby. The good always provoke the bad into calumny; the bad always provoke the good into doing more good; this is the nature of the world. One must be surprised if such things do not happen.

People too have to be pitied rather than condemned. They do not know. They have no patience to judge right. They are too full of lust, anger, and conceit to see clearly and know fully. So, they write all sorts of things. If only they know, they would refrain from writing or talking like that. We too should not attach any value to such comments and take them to heart, as you seem to do. Truth will certainly triumph some day. Untruth can never win. Untruth might appear to over-power Truth, but its victory would fade away and Truth would establish itself.

It is not the way of the great to swell when people offer worship and shrink when people cool off. As a matter of fact, no sacred text lays down rules to regulate the lives of the great, prescribing habits and attitudes they must adopt. They themselves know the path they must take. Their wisdom regulates and makes their acts holy. Self-reliance and beneficial activity – these two are their special marks. They may also be engaged in the promotion of the welfare of devotees and in giving them the fruits of their actions. Why should you be affected by doubt and worry, so long as I am adhering to these two? After all, praise and blame do not touch the Atma; they can touch only the outer frame.

I will never give up those who attach themselves to Me. When I am thus engaged in My beneficial task, how can My Name be ever tarnished, as you apprehend? I would advise you not to heed to such absurd talk. Mahatmas do not acquire greatness through someone calling them so; they do not become small just because some calls them small. Only those low ones who revel in opium but claim to be unexcelled Yogis, only those who quote scriptural texts to justify their gourmandry and pride, only those who are dry-as-dust scholars exulting in their argumentative skill, are moved by praise and blame.

A Message for Mankind – A Divine Path Of Love, Peace, And Human Unity

A Message for Mankind is a reminder that human life is not meant only for eating, earning, competing, and passing time. Life has a higher purpose. Every person is born with the power to love, serve, forgive, learn, and realize the divine presence within. When this truth is forgotten, people become restless, selfish, and divided. When it is remembered, life becomes peaceful, meaningful, and useful to the world.

Today, humanity has made great progress in science, technology, education, communication, and comfort. People can travel faster, connect instantly, and access endless information. Yet many hearts remain lonely, fearful, angry, and dissatisfied. This shows that outer progress alone cannot bring inner peace. The world needs not only clever minds, but also pure hearts. Knowledge must be joined with compassion, and success must be guided by values.

A Message for Mankind teaches that love is the foundation of true human life. Love should not be limited only to family, friends, or people who agree with us. Real love expands beyond personal boundaries. It sees every human being as worthy of respect and care. A loving heart does not ask about caste, religion, country, wealth, or status before helping someone in need. It responds to suffering with kindness.

The greatest weakness of humanity is separation. People divide themselves in the name of religion, language, nationality, race, position, and opinion. These outer differences may exist, but they should not become reasons for hatred. Beneath all differences, every person wants happiness, safety, dignity, and love. When we understand this, compassion becomes natural. Unity does not mean everyone must look or think the same. It means we respect differences while remembering the oneness of life.

A Message for Mankind also reminds us that peace begins within. Many people want peace in the world, but they do not try to create peace in their own thoughts, words, and actions. Anger in the mind becomes harsh speech. Harsh speech becomes conflict. Conflict becomes suffering. If we want a peaceful world, we must first reduce hatred, jealousy, pride, and selfishness within ourselves. Inner change is the beginning of outer harmony.

Truth is another essential value for mankind. Without truth, trust disappears. Families become weak, friendships become doubtful, and society becomes unsafe. A truthful person may face difficulties for some time, but their heart remains strong. Falsehood may give temporary benefit, but it creates fear and restlessness. Truth gives dignity to life and strength to character.

A Message for Mankind gives great importance to selfless service. A life lived only for oneself becomes narrow and empty. When we serve others, our heart expands. Helping the poor, feeding the hungry, educating children, caring for the sick, respecting elders, and comforting the lonely are sacred actions. Service does not always require wealth. A kind word, a patient ear, and a helpful attitude can also bring light into someone’s life.

Humanity must also learn to control desire. Desire itself is not always wrong, but uncontrolled desire creates greed, competition, jealousy, and sorrow. People want more and more, yet feel less and less peaceful. Contentment is a great spiritual strength. It does not mean laziness or lack of effort. It means working sincerely while remaining grateful for what has already been received.

A Message for Mankind teaches that education must build character. A person may hold many degrees, but if they lack kindness, honesty, humility, and discipline, their education remains incomplete. True education should make a person more responsible, more compassionate, and more useful to society. Children should be taught not only how to succeed, but also how to live with values.

Respect for nature is also part of human duty. The earth gives food, water, air, shelter, and beauty. If mankind exploits nature without gratitude, future generations will suffer. Trees, rivers, animals, soil, and air must be protected. Living with simplicity and responsibility is not only environmental wisdom; it is spiritual maturity.

A Message for Mankind finally calls every person to become a better human being first. Before trying to change the whole world, we must change our own conduct. Speak gently. Think purely. Serve humbly. Forgive sincerely. Live honestly. Respect all faiths. Help wherever possible. Hurt no one knowingly. These simple actions can create a powerful change.

In the end, mankind does not need more hatred, pride, or division. It needs love, truth, peace, compassion, and service. Every human being can become a light in the world by living with goodness. When the heart becomes pure and actions become selfless, life becomes a blessing. This is the real message that can uplift humanity and bring divine peace into the world.
